Haigh Hall 4 mile August ’15

In a break from editorial convention we will publish this before Chorley as Dave Collins has turned out an excellent report so promptly.

The third and final race of the summer Haigh Hall 4 mile series took place in pleasant evening sunshine. With a few Harriers regulars unavailable, there was some concern that we might not be able to muster together a team of 4 men. As it turned out, we actually managed twice that number, and also had a couple of our top lady runners out too.

The race set off at what for me seemed a ferocious pace, as runners tried to make the most of the long downhill start. The long drag up to Higher Lane calmed things down a little, and then the even longer section back to the gates of the Hall wreaked more havoc. As inevitably happens with a field of only 100, the runners got strung out with small groups developing between the gaps. There was a good smattering of Harriers supporters around the course and their shouts were very much appreciated, although hearing “Come on Jayne” a few seconds after your own name has been shouted can be a bit disconcerting. And if one lap wasn’t enough, you then have to do it all over again!

Revelling in his discovery of mid-week racing, Howard Avery ran a superb 22.37 to finish in 5th place and get himself a well earned prize at last – he was considering taking aging pills to get into the vet 50 category. Chris Burton (15th 25.05) produced his usual youthful (didn’t run hard enough) sprint to zip past Dave Collins (16th 25.08)with less than 100m to go. Next home, and first in the women’s race (19th overall), was the ever-impressive Jayne Taylor in 25.42. Stuart Towns (or Atuart as he appeared in the results was the final counter for the men’s team in 26.16 (23rd). Paul Walker knocked a chunk off his previous Haigh Hall time for 27.36 and 33rd. He attributed this improvement to the loan of Danny Parkinson’s Harriers vest – please take note those of you that are awaiting the delivery of vests. Danielle Brearton was just behind Paul in 27.44 and was delighted to pick up the 1st lady vets prize – she was also 1st L35.

Although I didn’t witness it, it appears that Pete Gregory and Sam Blakeman had quite a battle, with Pete edging it (33.12 and 80th) by 4 seconds. I presume he drew on his previous experience as a Harriers sprinter to take this. Ian Stewart had appeared in the preliminary results in 12th position in under 25 minutes. Sadly, this was a mix-up with Karl Tuzio of Phoenix, but Ian (34.41 and 90th) continued to show the benefits of pushing himself in training to average just over 8 and a half minute mile pace, on what is a tough course.

The men were first team, with Chris Burton stepping up to receive the beer – not sure what happened to it. The ladies were one short of a team, otherwise they would have made it a double for the Harriers. The Stuart – Tuzio mix-up cost me a vet 50 prize, but race organiser Paul Carroll took pity and awarded me a bottle of wine. When I saw that it was white, and even worse Liebfraumilch, I was tempted to ask for a red, but even I’m not that hard-faced?

Haigh Hall 4 June ’15

Second week of June, second round of racing at Haigh Hall. our home ground!

A lovely sunny evening was the reward for the Harriers taking part. Not for the first time it was the Magnificent Seven who ran for Wigan Harriers (not always the same 7 but seems to be the number we have turn out).

What a gorgeous mob – and order an 8th vest!

image

The start – a familiar venue!

Watched on by some vocal and enthusiastic supporters! Although a small field there were some excellent inter club battles particularly with our fellow Wiganers from Phoenix.

Mike Harris shoulder to shoulder with Paul Seddon from Phoenix.

Starting to find some form and fitness was Andy Kaufman. Managing another of the customary podium finishes. Acting as an excellent stand in for Dave Collins was Chris Burton coming home in 25.07, an excellent 9th place with Mike Harris just behind in 25.17 in 10th place.

Battling side by side to the finish line were Warren Moorfield and Danny Parkinson, 12 &13th places, 25:47 & 25:49 respectively, great racing!

Just the two ladies but great performances from them. April Morgan 36th in 28:32 and Karen Schofield 49th in 29:30.

Some excellent performances deserve prizes and boy did we get a few! Endurance Store vouchers for Andy Kaufman (3rd Man), Chris Burton (5th), Mike Harris (1st V40), Warren Moorfield (3rd V45), April Morgan (5th Lady).

Finally the men took away the 1st place team prize and not for the first time this season.

Well done all!

Haigh Hall 4

The second week of the traditional summertime mid-week racing saw the action move to the familiar surroundings of Haigh Hall. The Haigh Hall 4 was being run for the second time in it’s current format by Wigan Phoenix. It was also a Central Lancashire Grand Prix fixture so a combination of that and the sunny skies were likely to lead to a massive field.

Wigan Harriers were out in force – a very healthy 16 runners making the start line, (although it proved to be impossible to capture everyone in a photo). Unfortunately some of these runners were not quite so healthy by the end of proceedings!

The 4 mile course starts right in front of the Hall, follows the main path downhill and then after 1/2 mile takes the track that is a sharp left. It then follows this up to the gates by the road, this is then followed round to the main entrance to the Park. Then a final run down Harriers training hill back to the start. That’s one lap, you do two with the finish about 100 metres away from the Hall’s front door. A nice level sprint (or maybe not) to the finish.

With 16 runners taking part, I can only pick out the edited high/low lights.

Tony Morgan was the first to suffer a problem, pulling up at the bottom of the hill with an ankle problem, hopefully it won’t be serious and Tony will be back in action soon. Chris Burgess fresh from his London Marathon experience went off well but stumbled on the rocky track on the second lap, hitting the ground. Fellow runners shot past him whilst checking that he was still breathing, thankfully Chris was able to finish out the race.

Caroline Rasburn raced again with a knee op looming, nothing like making sure you get your money’s worth out of those joints before they are fettled!

At the sharp end of things Andy Kaufman had no challenge from fellow Harriers and was a comfortable first finisher in 22.49. I have seen Andy after many races where he is already changed, sweat free and a cuppa in hand before most of his fellow club mates are finished. Last night there was a flushed face and sore calves, plenty of evidence of it being a hard race and of the Kaveman being human!

An usually familar face at training recently has been our tree swinging Steve Nicholls. Steve was disappointed with his run last week but right from the off he shot off like a scolded cat, racing home in 24.25.

Well done to Jayne Taylor in her first race back after marathon madness. Jayne was home in 25.50 and collected a £20 Endurance Store voucher for first L50, great stuff! Jayne managed to find some spare energy to spend a few minutes helping marshals with guiding runners down the funnel when the queue of runners was backing up.

Well done to the 16 Harriers who raced and contributed to another fantastic showing for the club in our backyard. The Mens team were 6th and the Ladies 5th so a respectable showing for all. A big thank you to the Harriers supporters who cheered on fantastically. Well done to the organisers and marshals who coped very well with the large turnout.

The mid week bandwagon rumbles into Rivington next week at 7.30pm for the Jubilee 5 Miler run by Horwich RMI. A two lap undulating road course, another chance for the Harriers to shine?

Haigh 4 miler – May 2013

Wednesday 8th May saw four Wigan Harriers take on the Haigh Hall 4 mile road race. For 3 of the runners this was not their first time but for Mike Harris it was a chance to do “a Millington” and register a PB over this distance as a newbie.

The course HQ is at Wigan Rugby Union Club which gave an opportunity for Dave Collins, Jayne Taylor, Gary Wane and Mike Harris to do a decent warm up as the course started within Haigh Hall. After giving the trees and shrubs a decent watering the Harrier’s quartet were ready to take on the hill start. Everyone noticed that Gary was really pumped and up for it, Dave concluded that Mel must have been feeding him raw meat all week! Continue reading
