Mid Lancs Cross Country…the story so far!

Too much training and a plethora of festive activity has meant we haven’t reported the club’s recent performances in the Mid Lancs Cross Country League. We have now reached the half way point so it’s a good time to catch up before battle recommences this Saturday in Burnley at Towneley Park.

November saw two fixtures, the first of these were in Barrow in Furness. A long journey but usually worth some cheeky extra points for this very reason.

20 athletes made the journey and were greeted by mild conditions and less mud than usual.

The Senior Ladies A team managed a 6th place out of 23 teams but the long journey didn’t deter our ladies as they also managed to field a B team managing 16th place – an excellent performance. Even better was the L35 team – 1st place, fantastic!

The Senior Men also managed two teams coming in with 5th and 20th places, again the Vets showed their class with a 1st place for the V40 team.

The Mid Lancs bandwagon then rolled into Sefton Park Liverpool, the venue for the European Cross Country qualifiers. These qualifiers are a dream for many of the Harriers…a dream that they won’t get lapped by the “Elites”!

Sefton Park is always a special event amongst our fixtures, a unique combination of a high number of competitors, enthusiastic spectators, loud music and an MC create a great atmosphere.

31 athletes across many categories represented Wigan Harriers, an excellent showing.

Under 15 Girls managed to field enough athletes for a team placing, a great 6th place.

The Senior ladies were also in good form coming home in 6th place out of 25 teams.

The men managed two teams again, 10th and 19th out of 26. This time the V40’s were pipped to 1st place by Southport Waterloo.

Three fixtures down and three to go, so how are we doing in the league tables?

The Ladies have had a solid start to their first season in Division 1 (Top division unlike in Football!!) currently in 5th place. The Ladies Veterans team are also in 5th place too.

The Senior Men have two teams: The Men’s A Team are in the First Division and just like the Ladies are currently 5th out of 7, so just above the relegation zone. The B team now in Division Three are placed in 3rd so still in with a shout of further promotion.

The Men’s Veterans team are currently first in Division 1 based on three consistent performances. The end of season result is based on the best four results so we have a real battle with Southport Waterloo for top spot – all fast old men required for action please!!

Upcoming fixtures – write them on your calendar!

10th January 2015 Towneley Park, Burnley
14th February 2015 Lawsons Ground, Blackpool
7th March 2014 Rylands Park, Lancaster
